STEAM...more than the subjects

 Your #STEAMbyte for the week...

Just as STEAM education includes more subjects than science, technology, engineering, art, and math, it is also more than just teaching multiple content areas.

As teachers integrate multiple subject areas together, they must also incorporate other elements to truly implement STEAM education. This does not mean ALL aspects must be implemented but the more connections we can make from the class content to engaging and authentic situations the better.

  • Transdisciplinary - relating to more than 1 branch of knowledge
  • 4 C's - Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity
  • Real world and Authentic - purposeful and meaningful to the students
  • Project based - sometimes referred to as PBL, related to problem based learning, focus is on the process
  • Student centered - provide student choice; teacher becomes a guide or facilitator
  • Career connections - raise awareness of how the class content connects to future careers
